TRE® Q&A

27 Common Questions About TRE®

Curious about TRE®? This guide answers 27 of the most common questions about Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises — the gentle, body-based method developed by Dr. David Berceli to help release deep muscular tension and calm the nervous system.

Below are 27 of the most frequently asked questions about TRE® (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises) — a body-based practice designed to help you release the deep muscular patterns of stress and tension that build up over a lifetime. The answers draw on the work of Dr. David Berceli, who developed TRE®, as well as years of hands-on practice. Whatever brought you here, you’ll likely find your question among them.

The Foundations

01What is TRE®?

TRE® stands for Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises — a series of simple physical exercises developed by Dr. David Berceli that help the body release deep muscular tension and stress. Rather than working through difficult experiences by talking, TRE® works directly with the body, activating its own natural tremor mechanism to discharge tension stored in the muscles and nervous system. You can read a fuller explanation in our guide to how TRE® works.

02How does TRE® work?

TRE® uses a set of gentle exercises to mildly fatigue the muscles of the legs and core, which then activates a natural reflex of shaking or vibrating in the body. These neurogenic tremors help release muscular tension, calm the nervous system, and restore a sense of wellbeing. The tremor is involuntary and self-regulating — your body sets the pace, intensity, and duration.

03Who developed TRE®?

TRE® was developed by Dr. David Berceli, PhD — an international expert in trauma intervention and conflict resolution who spent over twenty-five years living and working in war zones and disaster areas around the world. Observing how the body instinctively shakes in response to threat, he designed a simple set of exercises to evoke that same natural tremor safely and intentionally. His work is documented in books including Shake It Off Naturally and The Revolutionary Trauma Release Process.

04Why does the body tremor?

The tremor is a natural, instinctive mechanism that mammals use to discharge the high charge of energy that builds up during a threat. Animals in the wild visibly shake after escaping danger, then return to calm. Humans have this same reflex, but we often learn to suppress it. TRE® simply removes that suppression, allowing the body to complete the stress cycle it was always designed to finish.

05Is TRE® safe for everyone?

TRE® is generally safe for most people. However, those with severe trauma, certain physical injuries, pregnancy, or some medical conditions should consult a healthcare provider or a certified TRE® provider before starting. The guiding principle is “little and often” — going slowly and gently, especially at the beginning, so the body can integrate the experience comfortably.

06What are the benefits of TRE®?

Reported benefits include reduced anxiety, better sleep, decreased muscle and back pain, improved mood, greater emotional resilience, and a deeper sense of calm. Because TRE® works on the nervous system as well as the muscles, many people describe feeling more grounded and more able to handle everyday stress over time.

The Practice

07How long does a TRE® session take?

A typical TRE® session lasts about 30 to 60 minutes, including the warm-up exercises and the tremoring phase. When you’re first learning, the tremoring portion itself is kept short — often just a few minutes — and gradually extended as you become familiar with how your body responds.

08How often should I practise TRE®?

Beginners are usually advised to start with one or two sessions per week of around 15 to 20 minutes, increasing gradually as comfort and experience grow. More is not better, especially early on — the nervous system needs time to integrate between sessions. A steady, gentle rhythm produces far better results than long or intense sessions.

09Do I need a certified provider to practise TRE®?

While TRE® can be learned from books or videos, working with a certified provider is recommended — especially for those with a history of trauma — to ensure safety and proper technique. A provider helps you set the right pace, supports you if strong responses arise, and helps you build a practice you can eventually do on your own. You can book a private session with Anna to start safely.

11What does the shaking or tremoring feel like?

The tremors are generally gentle, involuntary muscle movements that usually begin in the legs or pelvis and may spread through the body. Most people find the sensation comfortable, even pleasant — a soft vibration, a fluttering, or a wave-like motion. It is not a violent or alarming shake, and you remain in control throughout.

13Can TRE® be practised alone?

Yes — once learned safely, many people practise TRE® independently as a regular self-care tool. Beginners, however, should start with guidance so they learn to recognise their body’s signals, set a comfortable pace, and stop the tremor when they choose. Self-regulation — the ability to manage your own level of activation — is the real skill TRE® builds.

16What should I wear for a TRE® session?

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing is best, as the exercises involve gentle stretching and lying on the floor. Many people practise barefoot or in socks. You’ll also want a soft surface — a yoga mat or carpeted floor — and a quiet, private space where you won’t be interrupted.

25Do I need to be fit or flexible to do TRE®?

No. TRE® is designed to be accessible to almost everyone, regardless of fitness or flexibility. The warm-up exercises can be adapted to your body, and the tremor itself requires no strength or skill — it’s a reflex, not an effort. If standing exercises are difficult, many can be modified to be done seated or lying down.

26Can I do TRE® online?

Yes. TRE® works very well over video, and online sessions are a comfortable way to learn from the safety of your own home. Anna offers online TRE® sessions worldwide, in English and Ukrainian, guiding you through each step and watching your responses just as she would in person.

The Experience

12Is it normal to feel emotional during or after TRE®?

Yes. Emotional releases such as laughter, tears, or surfacing memories can occur as tension leaves the body — this is a natural part of the process, not a sign that something is wrong. These responses tend to be brief and are usually followed by a sense of relief and lightness. A certified provider can help you stay grounded if emotions feel strong.

14Are there any risks or side effects?

Most people simply feel relaxed or a little tired afterwards. Occasionally, someone may feel emotional, or older injuries and trauma sensations may surface — which is exactly why professional support is recommended for some individuals, and why going slowly matters. As Dr. Berceli puts it, “little and often” is the safest way to practise until you learn how your body responds.

20How will I know if TRE® is working for me?

Common signs include feeling calmer, sleeping better, noticing less muscle tension, and an improved mood after sessions. Many people also report a subtler shift over time — a greater sense of resilience, and feeling less easily knocked off balance by everyday stress. The changes are often gradual and cumulative rather than dramatic.

23Can I do too much TRE®?

Yes — more is not better. Tremoring for too long, especially as a beginner, can leave you feeling tired, wired, or overstimulated rather than relaxed. The body integrates the release in the hours and days afterwards, so short, regular sessions work best. This is the heart of the “little and often” principle: you’re training your nervous system gently, not pushing it.

24Will TRE® bring up old memories?

It can, though it doesn’t always. Because tension and unfinished defensive responses can be held in the body long after an event, releasing that tension sometimes allows associated memories or sensations to surface. TRE® does not require you to revisit or talk about these — the work happens through the body. If you have significant trauma history, it’s best to practise with a certified provider who can support you.

Deeper Understanding

10Can TRE® help with PTSD or trauma?

TRE® is widely used as a supportive tool for trauma recovery, helping to regulate the nervous system and release the physical tension associated with traumatic experience. It is not a replacement for professional therapy. Dr. Berceli originally developed TRE® while working with survivors of war and disaster, and it has since been used with military personnel, first responders, and trauma survivors worldwide — often alongside psychotherapy rather than instead of it.

15How is TRE® different from yoga or meditation?

TRE® focuses specifically on activating the body’s natural tremor mechanism to release tension, whereas yoga and meditation use different approaches to relaxation and self-awareness. The practices complement each other beautifully — in fact, “neurogenic yoga” blends the two. But where meditation often works top-down (calming the mind to settle the body), TRE® works bottom-up, letting the body lead and the mind follow.

17Can children practise TRE®?

TRE® can be adapted for children, but it should be done with a certified practitioner experienced in working with young people. Children are often naturally closer to their tremor response than adults, but they also need an approach suited to their age, attention, and emotional needs.

18Is TRE® supported by scientific research?

There is growing anecdotal and preliminary research support for TRE®’s benefits, alongside thousands of consistent reports from people worldwide. However, large-scale, peer-reviewed studies are still needed, and Dr. Berceli himself is careful to present his framework as evolving theory grounded in extensive field experience rather than settled science. The research base is expanding as interest in body-based approaches to stress and trauma grows.

19Can TRE® help with chronic pain?

Many practitioners report improvement in chronic pain symptoms as deep muscular tension is released, though results vary from person to person. Tension held in the deep core muscles — particularly the psoas — can affect posture, the lower back, and the hips, so releasing it often brings noticeable relief. As always, chronic pain with a medical cause should also be assessed by a healthcare professional.

21Can TRE® be combined with other therapies or wellness practices?

Yes. TRE® complements a wide range of therapies and practices — psychotherapy, yoga, massage, somatic experiencing, breathwork, and more. It works particularly well as part of an integrative approach to healing, allowing the body to release tension that talk therapy or cognitive methods alone may not reach. Many practitioners use it to deepen and support the work they’re already doing.

22Why is the psoas muscle so important in TRE®?

The iliopsoas — the deep muscle group connecting the spine to the legs — sits at the theoretical centre of TRE® tremoring. It’s one of the body’s key “fight or flight” muscles, engaging to brace, curl, and protect us during threat. Because of this, it tends to hold deep, residual tension from stressful experience. The tremor reaches and releases this core muscle in a way that ordinary stretching rarely can, which is part of why TRE® can feel so profound.

Getting Started

27How do I get started with TRE®?

The gentlest way to begin is with guidance. You can explore the full sequence in our guide to the 7 TRE® exercises, watch along with the TRE® videos, or — the safest option for most people — book a session so you have someone watching your responses and setting the right pace. From there, you can gradually build a practice you can carry on independently for life.

A note on safety

TRE® is a self-help practice for releasing stress and tension. It is not a substitute for medical or psychological treatment. If you have a serious medical or mental health condition, please consult a qualified healthcare professional before beginning.
